PRELIMINARY DESIGN
The project area is sited in the old town of Saracinesco (Rome), about 918 meters above sea level within the perimeter of the ancient ruined fortress (XI cent.) The position, the altitude, the proximity to Rome and the system of woods and old towns nearby, not yet compromised in their natural relationship between town and countryside, make the site a special place to read nature, type and texture of the human settlements in Latium close to the Apennine. The project aims to recreate the relationship between the geographic perimeter of the ancient military building and the territorial system. In the space enclosed by the ruins it is proposed a public park open to the citizenship. The garden of the fortress is designed by subtraction, to enhance the relationship with its surroundings. The architecture is manifested by the green design. The plants are selected for their quality of volume, colour of leaves, flowers and fruits. An interior landscape à réaction poétique with the system of woods and valleys marks the change of the seasons, enhancing the value of a living garden, set in a boundary of ruins. Trees and furnishings create a space division made by places with different vocation: the orchard defines a wall-path to walk upon the line of the roofs, the tall grasses create a wind-room accompanying the perception of the territory; the benches are chaise longue cut into the ground, placed in vantage points to view the landscape.
