the site.

the site is set within the boundaries of the open spaces of the Hotel de Galliffet, the late 18th century historical building, which has lost over the years the original relation with the city of Paris and is now nestled within the city fabric, surrounded by blind walls delimitating its external spaces. the courtyards next to the eastern and southern walls are the ones dispatched for the extension of the Institute.

the project.

The proposal chooses not to work on two separate interventions - the wings -, but sets a systemic solution for the whole compound of the Italian Cultural Institute, including the new wings, the historical building and the public parterre.

This result is reached by inventing a large public space on two levels (the external mineral plaza and the foyer des cultures in the basement level) that distributes independently the functional blocks of the center: The historical building is dedicated to institutional roles and the direction; the new wings home the classrooms for the language courses, the offices and the Hotel d'Italie; the artists' residences are spread over the whole compound; an at last the library is given an independent entrance and connected to the central foyer, which is the main core of the project. The foyer is a large flexible and performing space, that can be configured to host the activities and the cultural program of the institute, allowing different sets of events at the same time. There are three main spaces, separated by moving glass walls: the Atrium / exhibition space, the auditorium, the offices. The reconfigurability of the foyer allows a total use of the space for festivals (literature, music, design, etc), exhibitions and large performances (dance, theatre, concerts, etc).

The new layout of the Italian Cultural Institute is conceived as a centre for the promotion of the Italian culture, language and arts, potentially active 24/7 in its independent and separate parts.

The design of the open spaces and of the green surfaces is thought as a contribution to achieve the environmental sustainability goals fixed in "Paris Vert" by the Paris City Council. It aims to reduce the urban environmental warming and to augment green surfaces within the historical city.

La Cité des Cultures d'Italie is a tribute to the Italian and European model of the city organized around its public spaces, that are places for producing and sharing knowledge: art, applied arts, industry, culture in its different forms.
