FLEXI

In the project for the Ridotto of Rossini Theatre in Pesaro, STARTT imagines a theatre within a theatre, a flexible “theatrical machine” able to assume different configurations.

FLEXI is the renovation project of the Ridotto of Rossini Theatre with the aim of creating a theatre within a theatre: a multifunctional hall to expand the cultural and performing arts offer in the city. The project is born from the idea of the reconfigurability of the space in order to create every time the right scenarios for performing arts, music, drama, dance theatre or associative and political events of the citizenship (conferences, press conferences, parties, etc.).

The project also resolves the issue of a public funding divided into two parts, in stages: the idea is that of a yard – theatre where the first stage of technical preparation for the final theatre becomes an ephemeral theatre immediately functioning through low-cost solutions while waiting for the final realisation.
These technical and structural arrangements house the track system for sliding a double layer of textile walls which control the insulation of the room and the need for sound refraction or absorption depending on the events to be hosted. The motorized curtains can close or open the space as required, with the possibility of dialoguing with the rediscovered architectural decorations of the 1930s.
This ephemeral theatre is also a construction site theatre: the track system solves the future anchoring of the acoustic shell of the theatre in the theatre, the final space.
The final solution accommodates a mobile part-floor system which will allow different configurations to be obtained according to artistic requirements: the floor is in fact divided into twenty rectangular modules which could be raised or lowered by means of a rigid chain actuator mechanism powered by an electric engine.
The hall becomes an unconventional fluid space where stage and stalls hybridise for a better integration between performer and audience.
