PROJECT STATUS
FINALIST PROJECT
Competition
In the finalist project for the renewal of the Tschurtschenthaler park in Bruneck, STARTT OUTLINES A GREEN EDGE, a place for celebrations and collective events which dialogues with the history of the city.
OUTLINING THE EDGE is the finalist proposal in the competition for the renewal of the Tschurtschenthaler square in Bruneck.
The Tschurtschenthaler square is located on the edge of the centre of Bruneck: a meeting place and the access to the “lower” city, housing a music pavillion. The aim of the competition was to define a multifunctional space that would combine the daily passage of citizens and tourists with a public place for festivals and urban events.
The project designs a single threshold space on the edge of the historical city: a multi-layered solution that combines the design of the public space with that of a new building.
A green edge, a contemporary landscape that dialogues with history, articulates an intimate square and evokes the urban space of the customs square that disappeared in the 19th century. The green edge protects the square from street noise, contains the new facilities for events and allows to perceive the relationship between the medieval city, its walls and the surrounding landscape.
The new building, located along the edge, houses a block of facilities to support the festivals and is designed to ensure the multi-functionality of the square and its usability throughout the year. A mobile sliding canopy is integrated in the thickness of the roof/green border to guarantee the possibility of holding outdoor events: a horizontal cavity contains a removable textile cover designed on the model of Roman velaria.
This solution, which allows the roof to be opened completely, partially or closed, makes various scenarios possible in order to host community events (Christmas markets, concerts, fairs) and fix the idea of the Tschurtschenthaler square as a playful meeting place in the collective imagination.
