Ever since the first studies of the planet’s health were made public in the second half of the 20th century, people have started to become aware of problems posed by climate change, and the need to come up with adequate responses to these environmental challenges has opened up a wide-ranging debate in the last few decades over the sustainability of human activities. This public discussion has inevitably brought with it a general reappraisal of the disciplines and sciences that study and organise the modes of human settlement on the earth.
